Mustang Creek Estates of Burleson – School Supply Drive for Local Teachers

September 13 @ 8:00 am - 6:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every day that begins at 8:00am, repeating until September 14, 2018

Mustang Creek Estates of Burleson, an assisted living and memory care community, is excited to host a supply drive in honor of its existing partnership with Clinkscale Elementary School. The senior living community is asking the public to help support local teachers by donating some of the most frequently used items in their Clinkscale Elementary School classrooms. Every year, teachers around the country spend hundreds of dollars on school supplies to support the children. Estelle Hieger, resident of Mustang Creek Estates of Burleson, is a retired teacher of 26 years who understands the struggle teachers face. This is why the senior living community decided to make teachers the focus of the supply drive. The list of needed items includes white and colored cardstock, sheet protectors, thermal laminating pouches, and black expo markers (skinny), but the teachers would be grateful for any school supply donations. The items can be dropped off Monday through Sunday between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. at Mustang Creek Estates of Burleson inside House A at 1155 NW John Jones Dr in Burleson. The drive will go until mid-September. This initiative is part of an ongoing partnership between the senior living community and the school. Residents of Mustang Creek Estates of Burleson visit the school regularly for a reading program.

“For me, teaching was one of the most wonderful and rewarding experiences,” said Hieger. “One time during registration, a little girl was scared and crying when she came into my class. She thought I was strict. At the end of the school year the same little girl cried again, this time because she didn’t want to leave my class. That’s how I knew I did a good job during the year. I am so excited we are helping the local teachers because I understand the challenges at the beginning of a school year. This supply drive is a meaningful gesture, and I am glad to be part of it.”

Hieger, 94, is originally from Boston and has three children, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was married for 44 years, and she originally wanted to become a nurse. After an opportunity presented itself, she became a second-grade teacher and didn’t retire until the age of 70. When it was time for her to retire she had second thoughts, but she knew it was time for her to leave the classroom.

“The goal of this supply drive is to help support some of the hardest-working and most selfless people in our community – the teachers,” said Tegjula Hilburn, Area Manager at Mustang Creek Estates. “We hope the supplies from our drive will help them be successful in the classroom throughout the entire school year. Our residents love visiting the school and interacting with the children and teachers on a regular basis. Intergenerational activities are extremely beneficial for the children and the residents because both generations can learn so much from each other.”
