Alzheimer’s Texas Hosts Dementia Caregiver Workshop

May 11 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

AUSTIN, TX (May 11, 2019) – Join Alzheimer’s Texas for this interactive workshop designed to empower caregivers with tools, techniques, and knowledge to provide expert care for loved ones with dementia. Based on methods pioneered by dementia care experts Teepa Snow and Naomi Feil and presented by Stephen Catoe, Certified PAC Trainer and Certified Validation Worker.

“Dementia does not rob a person of their dignity,” says Snow. “Our response does.”

The Dementia Caregiver Workshop is sponsored by Good Shepherd on the Hill, Alzheimer’s Texas, and St. David’s Foundation. It will be held at Good Shepherd on the Hill from 10:00 a.m. -2:00 p.m. with breakfast and lunch provided. As with all of our services, there is no charge to attend and all are welcome. Usually, these lessons are taught on four different days, but for this workshop, the following topics are combined and taught all in one day.

  • Compare/contrast “normal” aging vs. “not normal” aging related to various cognitive functions while also learning to recognize and intervene effectively when behavioral challenges occur.

Positive Physical Approach & Hand under Hand

  • Learn how to do “with” and not “to” and learn how to develop observational skills necessary to address unmet emotional and physical needs.

Communication Skills: Using Validation

  • Learn a method of communicating with disoriented older adults that is built on an empathetic attitude and a holistic view of individuals that helps reduce stress, enhance dignity, and increase happiness.
