Continuing Care Retirement Communities Seal - New LifeStyles Online displays the Continuing Care Accreditation Commission’s seal on the record of all accredited communities.

CCAC defines a CCRC as a retirement community that offers an older person a contract or contracts that provide residential living and various health care services for more than one year or the balance of his or her life. (taken from www.ccaconline.org).

From Care Interpreter™ (www.tlchoices.com):

Continuing Care Retirement Community (Commonly abbreviated as CCRC) - A community with a variety of living environments and services, ranging from Independent Living to skilled nursing care, all in one location.

Often one enters into the independent living component and moves to the assisted living or nursing section as help/assistance is needed.

A CCRC provides a range of amenities not found in single-type living environments; however, the cost is often prohibitive. A large entrance fee of many thousands of dollars may be required followed by monthly rates that can also be expensive.

CCRC entrance fees vary widely from $50,000 or less to well over $400,000.

CCRCs accept private funding only, except for those that allow for Medicare eligible patients in their nursing facility only. No financial assistance is available to help pay for the entrance fee or monthly fees at a CCRC.

Continuing Care Retirement Communities typically require that individuals considering entering the community be healthy, alert, and able to take care of themselves. Some communities, especially if one chooses a life care contract (one that ensures that there is coverage for care as needed) require that a physical evaluation be performed to verify that one is in good health and has no pre-existing conditions.

In most Continuing Care Communities (CCRCs) you can pay a substantial up front entrance fee to buy-in to the community and to ensure that all of your care needs will be taken care of as your needs increase. For many this peace of mind - knowing their health needs will be addressed without having to move - is the reason for choosing CCRC. You may also be able to choose various options that allow you to pay for medical or assisted living services, as you need them. Think through exactly what you want and the level of risk that you are comfortable with before making any decisions.
