Assisted Living is a housing option for older adults and seniors who need some assistance with activities of daily living, but do not require the kind of 24-hour nursing and medical care provided by nursing facility. |
| Continuing Care Retirement Communities |
Continuing Care Retirement Communities

Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC) CCRCs are different from other types of senior housing because these communities provide housing, personal services, and health care, usually at one location. CCRCs offer an environment and the services necessary for residents to "age in place". In other words, as a person's personal and health care needs change, they are able to remain at the retirement community. |
| Home Health Agency |

Home Health Care Agencies are certified by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to provide basic health care and physician-authorized services to disabled or elderly individuals. Certification is required to have services covered by Medicare and Medicaid and also demonstrate that the agency meets certain minimum standards. |

Hospice programs provide palliative care to terminally ill individuals and their families. |
| Nursing Homes |

Nursing Facilities or Nursing Homes, as they are more commonly known, care for nearly 54,000 people in Massachusetts, providing both long term care for the elderly, disabled and the chronically ill and short-term care for individuals who have been hospitalized and need a period of medical monitoring and/or rehabilitation before returning home. Among the services provided by nursing facilities are 24-hour nursing care; rehabilitative care, such as physical, occupational and speech therapy; and help with personal care, such as eating, dressing, toileting and bathing. In addition, a growing number of nursing facilities now provide specialized services for people with Alzheimer’s disease. Many also provide respite care to enable families to take some time off in caring for an elderly or disabled relative. |
| Rest Homes |

Rest Homes are facility licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to provide 24-hour supervision and supportive services for elderly or disabled individuals who do not routinely need nursing or medical care. |
