Assisted Living Facilities Assisted Living Assisted Living Facilities (ALFs) formerly known as domiciliaries, are a rapidly growing residential care option providing room, board, laundry and personal assistance with activities of daily living. All services are private-pay, and Assisted Living Facilities are not required to employee skilled nursing personnel. Most ALFs are freestanding group homes ranging from 4 to 16 beds, but others are a part of retirement communities or nursing home complexes. ALFs are located in most Alabama counties.
Home Health Agencies Home Care Home Health Agencies (HHAs) certified by Medicare serve the homebound in every county in Alabama. Intermittent skilled nursing care, personal care, and other social and therapeutic home services are ordered by a patient's own physician. Home health care is covered by Medicare, Medicaid and many private insurers, but not all HHAs accept all sources. (Sitter services also offer in-home senior and elderly personal care, and private duty nursing agencies offer skilled and personal care, but neither is state licensed or federally certified.
Hospice Hospice Hospice Programs are licensed to provide a coordinated program of home outpatient and inpatient care to meet the physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of persons in the final stage of life. Medicare, Medicaid and many private insurers pay for hospice care, which is coordinated by a physician-directed team. Pharmaceuticals, personal care and medical equipment may be provided. Hospice health care services are available in most counties.
Nursing Homes Nursing Skilled Nursing Facilities (Nursing Homes) offer 24-hour skilled nursing care for convalescent and restorative care needs. Nursing Homes range in size up to 284 beds and are usually freestanding, but sometimes are part of hospitals or retirement communities. Care is provided primarily by nursing assistants who are directed by a registered nurse (RNS). Primary sources of payment are Medicaid, Medicare and private pay, but not all facilities accept all sources. Nursing homes are dispersed throughout the State of Alabama.
Specialty Care Assisted Living Facility Assisted Living Specialty Care Assisted Living Facility means a facility that meets the definition of Assisted Living Facility but which is specially licensed and staffed to permit it to care for residents with a degree of cognitive impairment that would ordinarily make them ineligible for admission or continued stay in an assisted living facility. Residents admitted to specialty care assisted living facilities must meet all eligibility and continued stay requirements specified elsewhere in these rules. Group Specialty Care Assisted Living Facility (GSC) means a specialty care assisted living facility authorized to care for 4 to 16 adults. Family Specialty Care Assisted Living Facility (FSC) means a specialty care assisted living facility authorized to care for 2 or 3 adults. Congregate Specialty Care Assisted Living Facility (CSC) means a specialty care assisted living facility authorized to care for 17 or more adults.
